Emergency Overnight Shelter

Volunteers are a key part of operating the Anderson Emergency Overnight Shelter for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness. Please take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions, and make sure you are registered to volunteer before signing up for a shift using the calendar below.

*MEAL PROVIDERS are separate from Evening/Breakfast HOST(S). If you are interested in SERVING your meal, please ALSO sign up to be a HOST. Up to two people can host breakfast, and up to three can host dinner.*

How many meals should be provided?

Over the month of November, we will be ramping up from 20 to 40 meals. Please contact Cherrell Jackson at cjackson@housingforward.org if you have questions about the number of meals you will be expected to provide.

Am I responsible for serving and eating utensils (including plates, napkins, cups), or just food? What about drinks and condiments?

It is NOT necessary to provide serving and eating utensils or condiments. Please provide all food items needed for the meal and drinks (bottled water, jugs of lemonade/juice, or similar).

Can I cook onsite?

Our kitchen is small and not outfitted for cooking (just warming food and light prep) so the bulk of the meal should be prepared offsite and delivered to the shelter ready to eat prior to mealtime.

Do meals need to be individually packaged?

No, meals do not need to be individually packaged. Both dinner and breakfast will be plated by the shelter HOSTS or by staff.

What time does food need to be delivered?

Because many clients leave early in the morning, breakfast should be delivered the night before between 7:00 – 8:00 pm. Dinner should be dropped off between 6:00 – 7:30 pm.

How do I enter the building? Where do I park?

The shelter is located at 112 S. Humphrey Blvd. in Oak Park. When you arrive, ring the bell at the door to notify the Shelter Manager. Please do NOT park in the lot in front of the building. You may temporarily park in front of the front door (with your flashers on) to drop off meals, but if you are planning to stay, please park on the 100 S. block of Humphrey.

What happens to leftovers?

They are stored and reheated for the next day. Please provide food in containers that allow for reheating (like aluminum foil).

What happens if my group is unable to fulfill its commitment or is running late?

Please reach out to Shelter Manager, Vivian Lott (vlott@housingforward.org) or call (708) 603-5506 as soon as possible so she can make alternative accommodations.

If I would prefer not to cook, can I donate a meal from a restaurant or supply a gift card instead?

Absolutely! If you are interested in donating a gift card, please consider purchasing from a local grocery store so our staff can buy shelf-stable items.
