Volunteer Acceptance Policy

Due to the nature of our work, we require that all volunteers submit to a national sex offender check. Housing Forward does not accept any prospective volunteer that has been convicted of a crime that victimizes children, is sexual in nature, or involves violence, fraud or significant theft. Active volunteers who are convicted of any of these may no longer be allowed to serve as a volunteer for Housing Forward or may be asked to take a leave of absence. In addition to sex offender checks, and in some instances background checks, applicants must also complete a volunteer orientation to become active.

Housing Forward participates in community service-hour programs for high school students only. The need for these hours must be indicated at the time of application. Please note any community service hour requirements in the Volunteer Notes.

We reserve the right to dismiss any volunteer whose actions are not in line with our needs, mission, or values.

Volunteer Waiver

I wish to volunteer for Housing Forward. I understand that the nature of volunteer activities that I may perform in my capacity as a volunteer may involve physical activity, contact with unidentified and/or unfamiliar persons, or other potential risks. Knowing this and in consideration of being allowed to volunteer, I hereby assume full and complete responsibility for any personal injury and/or property damage that I sustain or cause during my participation as a volunteer. In addition, I hereby release, and hold harmless any of the clients, employees, volunteers, partners, agents, and/or board members of Housing Forward from any and all loss or liability claims I may have arising out of my service as a volunteer. If I am volunteering in the shelter, I agree to attend a mandatory orientation session and complete a DCFS background check before commencing volunteer activities.

I understand the rules and regulations and will adhere to the expectations and mission of the agency. I will also respect the confidentiality of both clients and volunteers. I understand that failure to do so may result in immediate termination of my involvement as a volunteer with Housing Forward.
