Job Summary

The case aide works in the Beds Plus Support Center serving men, women and families from the west suburbs who are experiencing homelessness. The case aide assists in the management of the Support Center activities and assists the program’s case management staff.  The case aide is responsible for 1) intake, assessment, and referral services to clients referred from the Emergency Shelter to the Support Center; 2) Assist in the facilitation of moving clients beyond emergency shelter services by linking clients to BEDS Plus Care’s basic services and case management team; and 3) provide crisis intervention, advocacy and education on behalf of clients.  The case aide strives to build a trusting relationship with emergency shelter guests in an effort to encourage access to services and housing and reduce the length of stay in the Emergency Shelter.

Job Responsibilities

Case Aide Management

  • Screen clients seeking admission to the Support Center (i.e. homeless eligibility) and provide an orientation to BEDS Plus Care’s programs and services
  • Maintain a current, up-to-date knowledge of internal BEDS programs and external resources that apply to the community served
  • Work one-on-one with clients and assist them to access supportive services and additional self-sufficiency resources
  • Provide targeted outreach to assigned case load as determined by supervisor by regularly engaging clients.
  • Provide referrals to all clients.
  • Provide clients with an explanation of services BEDS offers.
  • Maintain and submit to Support Center Manager weekly case notes and other relevant material in a timely manner.
  • Work with Intake Coordinator to manage volunteers for Support Center.
  • Work under the Supervision of the Lead Case Manager to assist in Case Management duties. 
  • Attend and participate in all required meetings (supervision, team meetings etc.)

  • Skills or experience in the following areas: homeless issues, mental health and substance abuse recognition, and accessing supportive services are preferred:
  • Applicant must be both team oriented and self-motivated, independent worker 
  • Consistent and reliable
  • Exceptional listening, verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills
  • Be able to exercise patience and critical thinking skills in stressful situations
  • Computer literate and skilled in Microsoft Office including proficiency in Excel and Word

Minimum Qualifications

  • GED or High School Diploma
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work preferred or related field from an accredited college or university required with preferably a minimum of one year experience working in social services
  • Familiarity with permanent housing options, mental health and substance abuse services
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment

Hours of Work

Full-time AmeriCorps Member; 1700 hours to be completed within contracted timeframe. Routine schedule is Monday through Friday 9:00am – 4:30pm but must be willing to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

Program Benefits:

  • Living Allowance: $13,732 to be distributed in equal allotments every two weeks within the contract term.
  • Education Award: Upon successful completion of the member's term of service, the member will receive an education award from the National Service Trust in the amount of $5,730.
