Celebrating National AmeriCorps Week

Celebrating National AmeriCorps Week

Last week we celebrated National AmeriCorps Week. Beyond showing appreciation for our AmeriCorps members, it was an opportunity to increase awareness of the valuable contributions AmeriCorps members make to our communities and country. Housing Forward would like to thank our 12 members serving here and hosted at our partner agencies, BEDS Plus and the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.

AmeriCorps members are able to build their experience and add important skills such as working on teams and interpersonal communications, leadership and civic engagement, and collaborating with others - while giving back to their communities. Lauren Draftz, Nutrition Programs Assistant at the OPRF Food Pantry, says, “My favorite part of this position is getting to interact with clients and seeing the impact firsthand. From my first day, I have felt valued as a team member and I couldn’t be more grateful for the chance to learn from coworkers who are so dedicated to their mission.” After completing a service year, Lauren plans to obtain a Master’s Degree at Emory University. “There are few organizations that give people an opportunity to dedicate a year of their lives to something that they’re passionate about and gain skills that they will later use in professional career.” continues Lauren.

We are fortunate to have the service of our AmeriCorps members and know that their work will support Housing Forward and our partner agency in our mission to transition individuals from a housing crisis to housing stability. It also helps us strengthen our community and have tangible impact on the lives of our clients.
